What’s the recovery like after liposuction?

In general liposuction or liposculpting is not a painful experience. The procedure feels similar to a deep-body bruise for 3-5 days. Most of our patients are back to work 5 days later, but wear a special garment under their clothes for a week or two.

Of all the procedures we perform, liposuction has a very high satisfaction rate with very little down time and virtually minimal scarring.

Will there be scars with liposuction?

Anytime we make an incision into the skin, the body heals with a scar. That’s why on the morning of surgery, we’ll have you bring your favorite bathing suit or other article of clothing, so that we can adjust the location of your scar accordingly.

Where will the surgery be done?

Your surgery will be done right in our own center. It is private and safe. We have a fully accredited, quality approved surgery center in our building at the corner of Shore Drive and Great Neck.

Liposuction and cellulite?

While liposuction can remove fatty deposits, it does not work well for cellulite. At our adjacent Spa & Laser Center off Shore Drive, we have invested in a new machine called Vaser Shape by MC1. We are the only practice in the area with this FDA approved technology for cellulite that has been imported from Italy.

How much does liposuction cost?

Liposuction can vary in cost from $3,000 to $6,000-$7,000, depending on how many areas of your body you desire to treat.

During your personal consultation we will go through any of the areas you feel are problematic. At that point, you will be able to meet with a personal patient coordinator, go through the areas we identified and come up with a price that will include not only the surgical fees, but the anesthesia, the operating room, and the garment for after care. There will not be any hidden fees or surprises.

Are there non-surgical options?

Yes. In recent years, several technologies have advanced in the names of Sirona, Celtic, and Vaser Shape by MC1, our most recent purchase. This technology, developed in Italy, is a bimodal ultrasonic head, which kills fat cells by imploding them with acoustical, mechanical, and ultrasonic energy. The fat is then able to naturally leak out of the cell and excreted by your body’s own lymphatics.

This one-hour long, pain free surgery is done in the office and does not require anesthesia, garments, or surgery of any kind. This surgery, which is comparable to hot-stone massage, does not leave behind any scars and requires no down time. While it sometimes takes several treatments to achieve your result, patients can lose up to one inch on a body part in just one hour.

What about machines that can be used to remove fat?

In recent years there has been several new machines that have come onto the market, including Celtic, Sirona, and Vaser Shape. All of these are non-invasive ways of removing fat, meaning they do not require surgery or cutting. The Vaser Shape developed by MC1 in Italy, the most recent machine, is the most promising.

This is a one-hour long, pain free surgery does not require any anesthesia, garments, or surgery of any kind and is done in our office. This pleasant experience not only reduces fat, but also tightens skin. It is based on a bimodal ultrasonic head, which kills fat cells by imploding them with acoustical, mechanical, and ultrasonic energy. By tightening the skin, this FDA approved device is able to remove cellulite.

Are there other options other than liposuction?

Yes. Other options include diet and exercise. However, there are area in everybody’s body that are inherited genetically or just can’t be worked off; and it’s those areas that give us the best results. So for our patients who have a good diet and/or exercise routinely, but can’t get rid of one or two troublesome areas, are the patients who ultimately get the best results.

What do we do with the fat once it has been removed?

In the last several years advancements have come to the field of plastic surgery where the fat that we remove during liposuction or body contouring, can actually be used to re-inject back into areas where you may have lost some fat. For instance as our faces age, we lose fat and volume in our face that gives us an old, tired, or haggard look. We can also inject the fat into other areas you may want enlarged or augmented, such as the buttox.

It’s this type of fat distribution and body sculpting that allows us to work on multiple areas of the body giving you a variety of different results that ultimately enhance the body.

How long do you have to wear a medical garment after liposuction?

Usually our minimum is approximately two weeks where we have you wear it all the time. After two weeks, we usually have you wear it at night time. While everybody is individual and has their own post-operative regimens, we’ll see how your body is reacting and if you have more swelling for example, you may need to wear the garment a little longer. We usually rely on your body telling you how long the garment needs to be on.

Post-operatively, we’ll combine your garment with a post-operative nutritional regimen to decrease your salt intake, increase your protein, and decrease your carbohydrates to optimize your healing and decrease the amount of extra fluid your body will see. Ultimately, these factors will combine to give you the best possible result.

Do you have to wear a special garment after surgery?

Yes. A compression garment that we have made for you is one of the most important factors in post-operative healing. This is essentially a medical girdle that’s designed just for your body by a specialist that we use here in the area.

This garment will be brought and put on you in the operating room while you’re asleep. The garment, being individualized for you body, allows the skin to shrink and redrape after the fat has been removed to give you the contour you always dreamed of.

What happens to your skin after liposuction?

For those of you that we remove a lot of fat on, your skin has to then tighten on its own. We use a body garment, essentially a medical girdle after surgery to help your skin tighten. Sometimes the skin doesn’t tighten and needs to be surgically removed. We will make that assessment at your pre-operative consultation to determine whether liposuction is right for you.

If we feel that there may be too much extra skin, it may not be the right procedure for you and we may need to discuss other options (such as a tummy tuck, thigh lift, or arm lift). This is why we spend a lot of time with you at the consultation before the operation to make sure that the procedures that you and I decide on are best suited to meet your goals.

Will the fat come back?

Once the fat has been removed with liposuction is wont come back. As long as your body weight stays the same, the fat will never return to the area it has been removed from. While we do leave some fat cells in the areas the we perform liposuction on, that is a necessity so that you have a smooth, even contour of your skin.

If you gain weight, those fat cells that are left behind can enlarge and become larger. But the fat that was removed will not come back.

How many areas of the body can be treated at the same time?

While there is a limit for how much fat that can be removed at one setting, at our private consultation with you and with our staff, we will analyze which areas of your body you’d like to re-contour.

Based on how much you need done in each area, we will be able to give you a realistic assessment of what can be removed, how much, and how many areas can be done at once.

How much fat can be removed during liposuction?

It depends on body types. When you come for your personal consultation we will not only analyze your body type, but will go through your expectation for your results. At that point, you can tell us which areas you are interested in having liposuction, re-contour, or sculpting.

There is a limit to how much fat can be removed at one time, which we will discuss with you at that time.

Can liposuction be done with other procedures?

Of course it can. We find that adding liposuction to breast augmentation, breast lift, or a tummy tuck only enhances that result. When you come in for your personal consultation we will go through all of your needs and expectations to make sure we come up with a personal approach and combination of procedures that give you the best result.

Our goal is your goal; giving you the body you always dreamed of.
