Meet Dr. Kaplan

Dr. Kaplan has been in Plastic Surgery practice in Hampton Roads since 1987. Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, he immigrated to the USA in 1977. He did his internship at the Wilmington Medical Center in Delaware and subsequently completed a full General Surgery residency at Temple University in Philadelphia earning his Board Certification in 1983. (Certificate # 29186)

He then completed a residency in Plastic Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School under the tutelage of Dr. Charles E. Horton and his associates, recognized as one of the top Plastic Surgery residencies in the country. He received his Board Certification in Plastic Surgery in 1988. (Certificate # 3575) Subsequently, he undertook additional Fellowship training in Microsurgery and Hand Surgery at the University of Louisville. He was Board certified in Hand Surgery in 1990 (Certificate # 77)

He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) as well as the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He has full staff privileges at SENTARA Norfolk General and Leigh Memorial Hospitals, Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and both Regional Medical Center and the Outerbanks Medical Center in the Outerbanks of N.C. Having a keen eye for detail and artistry combined with extensive training in General and Reconstructive surgery he has an in depth understanding of the complexities of the human body’s responses to surgical trauma. This knowledge results in low complication rates and a high likelihood of “getting it right the first time”.

In addition to his extensive medical training in both South Africa and the USA, Dr. Kaplan has been a lifelong student of art. Though focusing primarily on clay sculpture in recent years, he has drawn in pastels, sketched in charcoal and painted in oils and acrylics since he was a young child. He is married and has triplet sons who have often been the subjects of his artwork.
